At Psychology Services of Alaska, we understand the profound impact that dementia and Alzheimer's can have on individuals and their families. A thorough diagnostic assessment is the first step towards improving emotional well-being and quality of life for everyone involved.
Understanding Dementia
Dementia encompasses a variety of cognitive disorders that lead to a decline in memory, communication, and daily functioning. There are various types of dementias including Alzheimer’s Disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, front temporal dementia, Huntington’s disease, and Korsakoff syndrome. An accurate diagnosis is essential to the development of a robust treatment plan. Our neuropsychology team are well-versed in the tools and methods used to accurately diagnosis the various types of dementia.
Assessing Dementia
A dementia evaluation, like all our neuropsychological evaluations, generally consists of two appointments. The first appointment lasts approximately 4-6 hours and includes the diagnostic interview and assessment portion of the evaluation.
The second appointment will be your feedback session. Your neuropsychologist will review your results with you and provide personalized recommendations.
We will do our best to schedule your appointment within 30 days of your referral; however, your wait time will vary depending on the flexibility of your schedule.
Support for Individuals, Families and Caregivers
If an evaluation indicates a diagnosis of dementia, our team works to ensure all involved understand the diagnosis and are connected with resources aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with dementia and their families. The assessment report will include recommendations for specific services to address individual needs that will empower clients and their families with effective treatment strategies.
